Magnificat:
My Soul Magnifies the Lord
Founded in the Fall of 2005, and singing its first service in January 2006, MagnificatBoston is dedicated to the glorification of God by singing the Office of Anglican Choral Evensong. The singers come from parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and beyond. All choristers are auditioned and are volunteers with a wide variety of experience.
MagnificatBoston rehearses on a Tuesday evening once per month at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Malden, and sings Evensong once per month in a parish church or chapel in the Diocese. See upcoming services and repertoire scheduled in our third season and repertoire lists for services sung in our first two seasons on both Calendar pages.
Directed by Mark T. Engelhardt, the ensemble of 25 singers was formed at the conclusion of his16 year tenure as Organist and Director of Music for the Episcopal Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston, Massachusetts and Music Consultant for the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. Mr. Engelhardt now serves as Lay Associate and Principal Parish Musician at Grace Episcopal Church in Salem, Massachusetts.
Beginning in September 2007, Michael Salvatore joins Mr. Engelhardt as Associate Director. Mr. Salvatore is currently Director of Music at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Wakefield, Massachusetts. He is also Arts Department Chair, Director of Choral Music, and Music Coordinator and Instructor at the Fenn School in Concord, Massachusetts. Michael is a graduate of Hamilton College (B.A) and Boston University (M.A.), and also studied at York University in England and UMass, Lowell. Michael previously served as Director of Music for the parishes of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in Sudbury, Massachusetts and St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Beverly, Massachusetts. He has also worked with the choirs of Shore Country Day School in Beverly, Massachusetts; Reading Community Singers; and the Boston University Dear Abbeys acapella ensemble. We strive to sing the best of the repertoire of the English cathedrals and collegiate chapels and of American composers and to promote the composition of new music for the liturgy.
